What is I Love You Virus?

ILOVEYOU Virus or I Love You Virus is a computer worm that spread through email attachments in 2000. The ILOVEYOU worm was written in Microsoft Visual Basic Script (VBS) and took advantage of the fact that the scripting system was enabled by default in Windows. ILOVEYOU has spawned many variants that carry payloads that can overwrite data, modify files, download other malware, and send emails using Microsoft Outlook.

The man who created the ILOVEYOU Virus is Onel de Guzmán. It was created by a 24-year-old college student. He was poor and struggled to pay for Internet access. The sole purpose of this virus was to steal someone else’s password, which would allow him to use Internet services by logging into other user accounts. He had no idea that the virus he created would spread around the world.

Results of the Spread of I Love You Virus

This virus appeared on May 4, 2000. The virus spread quietly faster as if it first moved to Hong Kong, Europe, and finally the United States. It affected 10 percent of people with computers connected to the Internet, and 50 million infections were reported. This impact of the virus caused between 5 and 8.7 billion US dollars in damages. Now many large corporations have decided to completely shut down the postal system to protect themselves. At the time, it was one of the worst computer disasters ever.
